Indeed, I believe the uniform austerity is another reason why this album flows so well in spite of being a compilation. However, I'm refraining myself from giving it the highest rating due to a particular consideration: while the music is excellent in terms of singing and songwriting, I think it falls short in terms of instrumentation and innovation, in comparison to other great artists of the '60s. Actually some few hits are missing and some selections were never hits but the record works perfectly as it is. There are other memorable songs such as "The Boxer", "America" and "Scarborough Fair" the latter is probably my favorite recording by the duo. There are also four previously unreleased live tracks, with applauses cross-fading into the beginning of all time classics like "The Sound Of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that was a clever movement that certainly gives the album an identity. I think there's no better way to open a Simon & Garfunkel's album than with a catchy song like "Mrs. And after all these years, this is still my regular listening choice from Simon & Garfunkel.Īlthough this is a compilation of material released between 19, I feel it flows like a "proper album". In fact, my brother wanted to buy a longer, more comprehensive collection but I knew there was something special about this one and ended up convincing him.
